If you are in receipt of UK Income (eg Income from investments or pensions, property income etc). you may have to prepare and submit a UK Self Assessment Income Tax Return (the Tax Return).
An Income Tax Return is a summary of Income and Allowable Expenditure for a tax year. In the UK, the tax year runs from 6th April to the following 5th April*.
A UK Tax Return needs to be submitted to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) by 31st October if the Return is completed on paper, or 31st January following the end of the tax year if submitted electronically.

We prepare and submit UK Income Tax Returns for Australian residents who need to fulfil their UK tax obligations.
The UK Income Tax Return is made up of the Main Return pages and Supplementary pages. The Supplementary pages are completed according to a taxpayer’s individual circumstances.
Example
Mrs Smith is Employed by X plc. She also has a small consultancy business. In addition, she has income from a buy-to-let property.
She will need to complete the Main Return pages. She will also need to complete the following Supplementary pages: Employment, Self Employment and Property.

The Main Return pages and the Supplementary pages can be downloaded and printed from the HMRC website if you wish to complete the Tax Return and send it by mail. Paper Returns should be sent early enough to ensure that they arrive at HMRC before the 31st October deadline. If the Return is late, penalties may apply.
HMRC have an electronic Tax Return system and Tax Returns can be completed and submitted in advance of the 31st January deadline.
However, if you are not resident in the UK, you cannot complete the Tax return using the HMRC system.
If you need to prepare and submit a UK Income Tax Return, and you haven’t needed to previously, you will need to let HMRC know by registering for Self Assessment. There is a deadline of 5th October following the end of the tax year for notifying HMRC that you are in receipt of UK income, including Property Rental Income and Capital Gains on UK Property and Land.
